Donald Trump makes bizarre joke about his mum and King Charles – there’s one major issue

Donald Trump made a lighthearted remark about his mother while hosting King Charles III and Queen Camilla this week — but the joke quickly sparked debate online.

The King and Queen arrived in Washington, D.C. on Monday (27 April) for their state visit before traveling to New York on Wednesday (29 April). During their time in the U.S., they attended a state dinner, watched an aircraft flyover, and saw Charles deliver a speech to Congress.

The Story About Trump’s Mother

While speaking at the White House, Trump shared a personal anecdote about his mother, Mary Ann MacLeod, who was born in Scotland and moved to New York in 1930. He claimed she had a fondness for the royal family — and even a soft spot for Charles.

“My mother, I just see it so clearly… I told the King that she loved the royal family and she loved the Queen, and any time the Queen was involved in the ceremony or anything, my mother would be glued to the television, and she’d say ‘look, Donald, look how beautiful that is,’” Trump said.

“She really did love the family but I also remember her saying very clearly, ‘Charles, look young Charles, he’s so cute’.”

He then added: “My mother had a crush on Charles. Can you believe it, amazing how… I wonder what she’s thinking right now?”

Viewers quickly picked up on his reaction, with many sharing their thoughts online.

“Charles’ face says it all,” one person wrote.

Another commented: “So cringeworthy! Our poor King, having to endure this with a smile on his face!”

A third added: “He was indeed struggling and uncomfortable.”

The “Major Issue” Fans Noticed

Some social media users pointed out a detail that made the joke seem odd — the age difference between Trump’s mother and Charles.

One person noted: “Trump’s mother was 54 when Charles turned 18.”

Another wrote: “Trump’s mother was almost 36 years older than King Charles.”

A third added: “When King Charles was born, Trump’s mother was 36 years old.”

Charles Responds with His Own Humor

The King also had his own moment of humor during the visit, referencing history while making a toast.

“This said, our French friends can feel equally at home with a glance at a map. Indeed, you recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German.”

He then paused before adding: “Dare I say that if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French,” playfully nodding to Britain’s historical influence.

While Trump’s anecdote may have been intended as a light joke, it quickly became a talking point online — not just because of the comment itself, but also due to Charles’ reaction and the historical detail some viewers couldn’t ignore.
