Donald Trump’s intimate gesture toward Melania in front of King Charles and Queen Camilla sparks major backlash

A photo of Donald Trump appearing to get a little handsy with Melania Trump has sparked widespread discussion online — especially as it happened in the presence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The royal couple have been in Washington, D.C. since Monday (27 April) for their state visit, where they were formally welcomed with a ceremonial reception, including a 21-gun salute in front of the Washington Monument.

A Packed Schedule of Events

After the initial welcome, the group moved to the White House’s Green Room for an informal tea. Later, Trump held private talks with the King to discuss UK–US relations, while Melania and Camilla hosted an educational event for students.

The visit also included a grand state banquet and a historic speech delivered by King Charles to Congress.

The Photo That Sparked Debate

Despite the formal setting, one particular image from the welcome ceremony quickly went viral. Some viewers claimed it showed Trump giving Melania a small “love tap” on her backside.

The moment divided opinion online.

“Actually disgusting and probably embarrassing to the First Lady,” one X user wrote.

Another added: “Putting your hand on your wife’s ass when you’re walking with the king of England is not classy, it’s embarrassing.”

A third commented: “Imagine if Biden or Obama were feeling on their wife’s ass in public next to the Royal Family. But when it’s Trump, it’s a patriotic love tap. I am laughing my ass off rn.”

Others Defend the Gesture

Not everyone saw an issue with the moment. Some सोशल media users argued that it was simply a normal display of affection between a married couple.

“My wife and I frequently (as recently as this morning) give each other little love taps like the one Trump gave Melania,” one person said. “It is a sign of genuine affection between husband and wife.”

Another agreed: “I’ve done that to my girlfriend before it’s just a habit when you’re comfortable with someone – doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.”

A third added: “Wives love that as much as husbands like when they squeeze our shoulders or bicep.”

Ongoing Criticism Over Gestures

This isn’t the first time during the visit that Trump’s physical gestures have drawn attention.

He was previously criticized for what some described as an overly forceful handshake with King Charles, as well as placing a hand on the monarch’s arm while guiding him inside — actions that some claimed broke royal protocol.

Inside the State Dinner

Amid the controversy, the visit itself continued with all the expected formality, including a carefully curated state dinner menu.

Guests were served a hearts of palm salad with herb velouté, followed by spring herb ravioli. The main course featured Dover sole meunière with seasonal vegetables, while dessert was a beehive-shaped chocolate gâteau with vanilla custard and crème fraîche ice cream.

A selection of wines was also offered to complement the dishes, celebrating the shared heritage and long-standing relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

While the state visit was meant to highlight diplomacy and tradition, the viral image shows how quickly even small, personal gestures can become major talking points — especially when they unfold on a global stage.
